Milan, The Fashion Capital
Milan is recognized worldwide as the fashion capitals of the world. Milan is dotted with remarkable European Gothic architecture and gifted with legacy of art and history. Milan is a vibrant city surrounded with snow-capped Alps and preserved with tradition, culture and exemplary piece of art. Milan is a city where you will find doppelgangers for both Venice and New York in a day. I visited Milan in the month of February, 2019 for giving a presentation on my research paper at Politecnico De Milano (University). Milan has a lot for traveler to offer beyond just fashion. The fashion capital is full of lovely cobblestone streets, Italian restaurants, bar, cafe, churches, cathedral, shopping areas.
Best things to see in Milan:
Piazza del Duomo:
The construction of the Duomo of Milan began in 1386 and ended in 1965. The Cathedral of Milan is a church or great dimensions composed in its interior by big dark marble blocks where it’s possible to admire its stylized and spacious style with long columns of marble and carved statues that reach the ceiling. Among these columns are hanged large pictures representing different religious scenes. In addition it is possible to see the skeletons of different saints dressed with their finest clothes. Among the most striking elements are its beautiful stained glass windows and the statue of the Apostle Bartholomew.
Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II:
One of the most beautiful and oldest shopping mall in the world with high end brand shops like Prada, Gucci, Ferrari, Santoni, Armani, Patek Philippe, Jimmy Choo, Swatch Milano etc. It first opened in 1877.
Navigli:
This canal district is beautiful, particularly as the sun is setting and the locals come out for their aperitivo.
Churches:
Basilica di San Lorenzo, Santa Maria delle Grazie (here you can see great Leonardo Da Vincis famous Last Supper painting).
Sforza Castle:
The castle was built in 16th century and is one of the largest citadel in Europe. Its' now transformed into a museum where you can see pieces by Michelangelo, Titian, Tintoretto.
Milan central station:
Famous for its beautiful architecture.
Must eat in Milan:
Aperitive is one of the must do activities in Milan. Its' the typical pre-dinner Happy Hours with drinks and snacks. Italian Pizza, Coffee, white wine, Lasagne, Spaghetti are the must try foods and drinks in any good restaurants and bars. Pizzeria Spontini Milan food junctions are famous for its Pizzas and Lasagne.
Stay in Milan:
Airbnb apartments are the best option for budget stay in Milan as Milan is a very costly city and hotels are really very costly as compared to Airbnb apartments.
How to reach:
By train: Milano Centralate station is well connected with other cities of Italy and also most of the other major cities of Europe.
By plane: Milan is served by two airports Malpensa International airport and Linate airport. Malpensa is largest airport in Northern Italy.
Day trip from Milan:
Day trip can be taken to Lake Como, Lake Garda, Verona, Lugano (city in Switzerland), Bernina and St. Mortiz (Most scenic railway routes in Switzerland).
Milan travel guide tips:
Don't eat in station square.
Avoid taxis (very costly). Take radiobus or metro service.
Get Milan city pass.
Budget shopping available at Brera district.
Drink the tap water. Its safe in Italy. Packaged water is costly.
